Another gem in the neighborhood is lake Conestee Nature Park, http://lakeconesteenaturepark.com/. It is part of a larger recreation project with ball fields , etc. The lake itself is surrounded by a swampy forest. Hiking and bird watching are two great attractions, not to mention photography.
One of my favorite day trips in NYC is made by taking theM4 which winds around from the east side across to the west side, up Broadway to the Cloisters. For the price of a bus ticket you get to see NYC’s most interesting areas. I have tried to capture some of the experience starting with waiting for the bus and ending with arrival at the Cloisters.
Alice Austen (1866 – 1952), a pioneer American photographer and America’s first female photographer, spent most of her life living at the family home, Clear Comfort, on Staten Island, NY.which which is now a museum dedicated to her life and work. It is wonderful place to visit with excellent professional guidance and a great setting. The home has been rescued from entropy and developers both. My wife and I used to visit friends there when we lived on Staten Island in the late 1960’s and it is in much better condition than it was during our early visits. There is an exhibition detailing Alice, her life, home and work with with some of my early pictures of Clear Comfort represented as part of the historical record. Go visit and enjoy the home and a local restaurant pictured in this gallery. Click on the pictures to see them full size.
